of course we can not be sure of the identification only with photos, but I almost sure that the species is C. smithii. And for the identification it is not necessary the animal (parti molli), it is enough with the skeleton.
And it seems that these skeletons are not fossils.
In the book "Corales de las Islas Canarias" there is a description of the skeleton of each species that can help you to identify a lot of species.
Thank you very much Ivan, I will look to buy this book. I think you consider sub fossil these specimens, I have to look in some my old boxes while I collected fossil shells. I remember some Madrepora very similar to that illustrated in this topic coming from a Pleistocenic site close to my City dated about 1,5-2 milions of years. If possible, I will add this photos to this topic. Moreover, some time ago I posted a photo showing some madrepora coming from Otranto, can you help me to identify these species? Thank you again
thanks a lot for yor message. I recommended this book because the description of each species is not only in Spanish but also in English, so I think it is easier identify the species.
Yes, these maybe are subfossil specimens.
Where did you post the photos of madrepora from Otranto??
I am not know much about fossil species, but these specimens semms to be Caryophyllia. I do not know if here in the Mediterranean there were other Caryophyllia species similar to C. smithii.
Caryophylla smithii is present in Mediterranean sea, and in spite I'm not an expert in coralli, but I think that this scan may be interesting. It's a enough old work wich consider the skeleton too.
