Hello,
This is the first time I participate in the Forum. Excuse if I do not write in Italian but, although I undertand it, I do not know how to explain myself in your language and I am not sure if you all understand Spanish. I would like to know your opinion about this Emarginula. I think it is E. multistriata. Its dimensions are 21x16 mm in the base and 13 mm high. It was taken near Marbella (Málaga, Spain)in the beach among grit, and fresh dead. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello Sebas welcome in this forum. For me they are two species various. The two up are Emarginula multistriata, the third low Emarginula fissura. It waits for however the opinion of the other friends even if the quality of the photographies he is not much good one. Excuse my English

Ola Sebas, I think your specimen has to be assigned to Emarginula fissura (Linnaeus, 1758: Patella), cause its relevant heigth as compared to its diameter, because of the subcentral apex position and for the peculiar sculpture pattern, particularyly the crenulate margin. Emarginula multistriata has indeed a more elongated shell, with an apex position at or projecting out its margin. However it is surprising you could find it on a beach, since it doesn't live in shallow waters. Is it possible there exists some near place where fishermans wash their nets?. myzar

Many thanks to all for your welcome. You are right, by the general shape it may belong to E. fissura, but the abnormal size is what has confused to me. E. crassa is bigger and different, and until now I think that there are no records in Mediterranean. And the other similar species in size is E. multistriata. I have not clear the function of the "fissura", but I suppose it is for the siphon. Possibly the shell was removed from the bottom by fishermen as the only littoral(and no very common species)in my area are: E. huzardii, E. sicula and E. solidula.

Smriglio, C. & P. Mariottini (2001), Emarginula bonfittoi spec. nov. (Gastropoda, Prosobranchia, Fissurellidae), a new bathyal species from the Mediterranean Sea. Basteria 65(4-6): 139-143.
This is a bathyal species and may be that he originate from the cleaning of fishermen nets.
Thank you very much Carlo, I had references of the name but have no idea of the description of E. bonfittoi. It is always wonderful having a new Mediterranean species in your collection.

Mario quella postata da Sebas e' gia' una misura grande ,quindi anche l'altezza deve essere di conseguenza.Forse potrei determinare una E. sicula , pero' mi frena il colore che nella E.fissura e' quasi sempre tra il giallo chiaro e il crema avorio, e nella E. sicula tra il giallo chiaro e il bianco. Bianca come quella di Sebas non chiarisce la determinazione precisa, anche se la fascia dall'apice alla fessura e' intersecata dagli stadi di accrescimento in evidenza , cosa alquanto specifica della E.huzardi. Drake io ho perso un'altra occasione per starmenbe zitto. Ho insistito su Emarginula fissura quando Calogero ha precedente postato la Emarginula bonfittoi che non conosco. Siamo in forum di Biologia Marina e quindi i granchi sono sempre ammessi!!!!!!

Su questo sono d'accordo Drake: diametro ed altezza crescono grossomodo in proporzione, ragion per cui per una huzardi mi aspetterei un'altezza circa la metà di quella di Sebas, per non parlare della scultura, affatto diversa. Ha ragione Calogero, è Emarginula bonfittoi, specie batiale da lui descritta, di dimensioni grandi per il genere e che, ovviamente, nessuno conosce meglio di lui. myzar
