This is another of the spider species that I photographed on my recent trip to Cyprus. It was found Sadrazamkoy, Korucam Burnu, in the north of the island on 6 April 2018.
I thought it looked very curious (even apart from the fact that it has lost legs) and had no idea even what family to assign it to. I would be very grateful if anyone i able to identify it for me.
Many thanks Luigi. That was quite a surprise to me as I would not have expected Pisaura sp.
According to Robert Bosmans in Wildlife of Cyprus (ed David Sparrow and Eddie John) there was only a single species in this family published as present on Cyprus but he reports that three are now known there. On the Biodiversity of Cyprus NGO website Michael Hadjiconstantis illustreates one of these labelled as P.mirabilis. Living in the UK that species is very common here and I have huge numbers of them in my garden every year! It is our only UK species of that genus with just two species of Dolomedes (both of which I have seen and photographed) the only other representatives of the family in the UK.
