Ciao Alberto,
Non e' un Orthetrum trinacria ma un maschio di Selysiothemis nigra (Black Pennant). E' molto piu piccolo. Non e' una specie comunissima a Malta ma non e' rara. |

in our fauna (central-Wmediterranean area), Orthetrum trinacria is unmistakable, because it is the only libellulid in which the abdomen, very slender yet strongly swollened at base, in both sexes is longer than hindwings |

Many thanks for your reply and explanation.
This was the first time I came across S. nigra. About four of them were flying around with some O. tricacria, but I could tell it was different as it was much smaller.
I have now compared some of my images of both species, and the differences you pointed out are very clear, and hopefully I will not mix them up again.
Strangely, although I spent 4 hours watching them I could not see any females.
Any idea why this is so ?
