Are Pyrrhocoris apterus drink nectar?
or this guy just not read the right books?

Anyway this was strange behavior (first time to me).
This specimen move from one flower to other and back a few times.
and show what look a like nectar feeding.

The bug systematically point his labium from one nectar point to other like butterfly.
Each time for for a few second and move on.

The flower is Cynanchum acutum (Asclepiadaceae)

Although I found many Pyrrhocoris apterus specimens on this palant (mainly on the leaves, this only one I saw active on the flower himself.

To Amir, Why do you think they aren't reading books? I think the bug you found just read Encyclopaedia Britannica:
Some heteropterans are nourished by blood of animals ranging from mites to man; others feed from the sap of plants as diverse as giant redwoods and algae. Some suck surface fluids (e.g., nectar), some pierce tissues to suck sap or blood, and others obtain nourishment from dried seeds.


Pyrrhocoris apterus belong to a group called seed bugs but I don't think they can live on merely seeds diet since they also need some fluids and seeds are usally relative dry. I see them all the time infested plants and suck its fluids from the leaves and stem.
